What a wimp!

OK, so I spent most of my life in the Western U.S. and traveling through the square states is nothin'. Well, sometimes I have little people doing push-ups in Wyoming....

Today I was reading this article: Top Five Gifts for Road-Tripping Families. The writer (and I hope he's not a cousin of yours or something) extolls this car seat:

It is a wonder, a car seat that will fit your child forever and turns itself into a stroller so you don't have to wake Precious up when you get where you're going. The Sit 'n Stroll car seat system, retailing for $249.95! I can see that this would be oh-so-handy if you fly and have to lug the car seat and kid-who-can't-walk-yet through airports (been there, done that, don't want to do it again).

Then the guy gets to a hang-man game that, honestly, looks like fun. And it's only $12.99.

If your brood includes a tween or bickering siblings you’ve likely come to accept as I have that at times it’s desirable to let them plug in to portable electronics and leave the rest of the family alone.

Of course! Get the electronics out! My parents wish they had these things when they were traveling with five kids. Lucky us, to have these things now so the whining is kept to a minimum.

Now here's the wimpy part:

A small part of me still resists it, though, because driving through a state like Connecticut takes forever and it’s a good opportunity to interact.

Y'all, I checked Google Maps and, any way you travel through Connecticut, it's at the very most only 2 hours and 48 minutes!

I love this story!

Muggers Return Wallet After Seeing Army ID

MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee Army reservist's military identification earned him some street cred Tuesday, when he says four men who mugged him at gunpoint returned his belongings and thanked him for his service after finding the ID.

The 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student said he was walking home from work about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday when he was pulled into an alley and told to lay face down and with a gun to his neck. Four men took his wallet, $16, keys, his cell phone and even a PowerBar wrapper from his pants pockets, he said.

But the hostile tone quickly changed when one of the robbers, whom the reservist presumed was the leader, saw an Army ID in the wallet. The robber told the others to return the items and they put most of his belongings on the ground next to him, including the wrapper, the reservist said.

"The guy continued to say throughout the situation that he respects what I do and at one point he actually thanked me and he actually apologized," said the reservist, who asked not to be identified Tuesday because the robbers still had his keys.

The reservist said he asked the men, who all had hoods or hats covering their faces, if he could get up and they said he could before starting to walk away.

"The leader of the group actually walked back, gave me a quick fist bump, which was very strange," he said.

Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said the reservist is credible and that officers still were looking for the suspects Tuesday.

The reservist didn't realize until later that his keys were not with him and he doesn't know if the robbers intended to keep those, he said. Still, he said he feels lucky.

"I'm just kind of awe struck that everything was given back to me due to just being in the military, " he said. "I realize in pretty much every other situation that wouldn't happen."

He said he's never been deployed, only having signed up for the Army Reserves about a year ago. He said he is the first person in his immediate family to join the military.

Schwartz said there were two other incidents within 40 minutes in the same area and police suspect the four men were involved in all of them. The robbers were unsuccessful at 12:35 a.m., when the 39-year-old man they approached ran into the street and started screaming.

Schwartz said within 10 minutes of that they approached a 47-year-old man — a convicted burglar who had a Department of Corrections inmate ID in his wallet — ordered him to the ground and pointed a gun at him. They took his wallet, apparently unfazed by that ID.

Ares 1-X Rocket Launch

We saw the rocket! What a wonderful thing, even from 58 miles away. Now, to make you all jealous: Luci and I rushed out of the pool to go to the beach to watch the launch. Bryan and JT missed it--they were busy with surfing lessons!

Here's the story: Ares1-X Rocket Launch and a photo from Fox News.

Finally, an editorial on "The Financial Situation" that will make you laugh.

.
I HAVE decided Washington needs my help. I at least know about paying taxes, which is more than our treasury secretary does.

.
I mean, what did I miss? What happened? This country grows wheat. It produces food. Our cows are contented. How did we get broke?

.
In the old days the American business plan always worked. A guy with creative math manufactured an item for $1. He sold it for $4. He'd say, "You think 3 percent is bad?" So what went wrong?

.
Industry, thanks to our ever-increasing tax structure, is leaving the country. An American entrepreneur comes up with a new idea then a month later the Japanese reinvent it and the Chinese sell it to us cheaper. A businessman can't win anymore. He does something wrong, he's fined. Does something right, he's taxed.

.
A few minutes ago the folks who ran AIG were so rich they had their gums capped. Come April 15 we'll now be able to list that place as a charitable deduction. It's become a nonprofit organization.

.
Noah was probably the last smart financier. Who else could float a company when the whole world was in liquidation.

.
And the whole time TV's know-it-alls, who are fighting with their bosses to earn more than minimum wage, are spouting stuff like: "Commodity fluctuations multiplied by inflationary pressures complicated by international imbalances intensified by political tensions are what's causing our financial instability." Hey, if they don't know, why don't they just say they don't know?

.
Everyone's kaput and yet the president says we're on the right road and business is booming. Must be he has a better location.

.
The recession's so bad even plumbers are now flying economy. When I started checking into it I was told all this talk about soaring prices of meat and milk and bread is pure propaganda. Sure. Circulated by people who eat. What it really means is your savings won't buy as much today as it did when you originally didn't have any. Or, to put it another way, after you get enough to buy something, it isn't enough. My nephew said to me: "I put some money together to buy my wife a mink. Wasn't what she wanted but I couldn't afford to get her a pot roast."

.
A dressmaker I know complains that longtime customers aren't altering new clothes. Why? They aren't buying new clothes. They love her work but she's now not getting work. She didn't invest with Bernie Madoff and doesn't understand how come she suddenly has no money. And her husband asked the paymaster in his plant, "Where's my paycheck?" The cashier explained, "After deducting withholding, state tax, city tax, Social Security, retirement fund, unemployment, insurance, hospitalization, our dental plan and group life insurance, you actually owe us $14.95."

.
So I asked this couple: "Are you saying you can no longer live within your income?" And they replied: "You kidding? It's all we can do to live within our credit."

.
I met a cloak-and-suitor who was told that if he wanted to survive he had to give up wine, women and song. Told not by his doctor - by his accountant.

.
Nobody can afford anything. No wonder Michelle Obama's dresses don't have sleeves.

.
Our economy is not in a coma. Our legislators are. The stimulus package they need is in the brain or other unused parts. Handing $800 billion to one company, $765 trillion to another. And a buck and a quarter to each American. I mean, where's all this money headed? It can't all be going to our government officials!

.
Everything's tied into this stimulus. Coffee's a stimulant. Booze is a stimulant. Drugs are a stimulant. What Washington's stimulating is rage. The subway fare's going up, the jobs are going down. With today's price of postage it costs more to mail this stimulus than the person gets. Congress should announce: "We are now spending $3 to let you know you'll be receiving $2." And I figured out why it's so expensive to send out that letter. The postage is only 42 cents but it's $4 for storage. In terms of mail delivery, if not for ESP none of us would ever hear from anybody.

.
But back to our economy. As I think about it, you can't trust bankers in any case. They can't count. If they could, they wouldn't always have eight teller windows and two tellers.

.
I understand the economy is grim. Remember Alan Greenspan? The man hasn't smiled since his bar mitzvah and as near as I can figure that's about when we had The Great Crash.

.
And the problem is global although other countries have their own particular problems. Like take Cuba - please! The island's in the Caribbean, the government's in Moscow and the people are in Miami. And the Middle East? Hezbollah officials just released a cable that went to Ahmadinejad saying, "Keep up the good work. You're my kind of guy. Signed, 'Khadafy.' "

.
Who I really feel sorry for are the muggers. So few people have cash these days.

Guizhou made the news....

Guizhou is Luci's province. The end of the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year is going on. Here's the story:
.
.
"...dragon dancers in Dejiang traditionally wear fireworks on their costumes and consume alcohol, creating a risk to themselves and the public." The police thought they were a hazard. So, no dragon. Result: 10,000 rioters, by some accounts.
.
Don't mess with the dragon!

Ya think so?!

Early yesterday morning I got on the internet and checked the overseas news. Some genius decided that yesterday would be a good day to try to attack a convoy of "foreign troops" in Ka bul. Knowing that John was traveling, and seeing no "I'm safe" email, I waited on pins and needles until he made his usual morning call. What a relief to hear his voice! John said he saw the same news article I did, and wondered why the coalition didn't put out some news of their own...(my guess is the attacker had lousy aim and injured no one but himself)...and thought he ought to email.

Ya think so?!

I told him to just go ahead and email next time. Every time.

Little things mean a lot.

Did you see this story?

Virgin Mary Gives Birth to Baby Jesus on Christmas Day ... in Peru

Virgin Mary gave birth to 7.7 pound baby Jesus on Christmas Day. In Peru.
.
Really.
.
Twenty-year-old Virgen Maria Huarcaya delivered her newborn son, Jesus Emanuel, in the early hours of Christmas in Peru's capital of Lima, Reuters reported.

The baby's father, Adolfo Jorge Huamani, is a carpenter, causing religious Peruvians to compare the 24-year-old to Mary's Biblical husband Joseph, who was a carpenter as well.
.
Though the boy wasn't placed in a manger — he stuck around in a ward at the city's central maternity hospital — he's got Peruvians gabbing about his birth, Reuters reported.
.
"Two thousand years later the story of Bethlehem is relived," read a headline about the birth in El Comercio, Peru's main newspaper.
.
"A few days ago we had decided to name my son after a professional soccer player," the father said. "But thanks to a happy coincidence this is how things ended up."
