This is a sort of rambling post...skip it if you like.
Something's got to change...I've prayed for a long time for wisdom in how to protect our time as a family, and ensure that we are doing what we ought to be doing for our kids. How to guard that time, without becoming hermits? How to train them to love God more? How to have the children all feel like they are on the same team, rooting for each other instead of going off to study alone?
Something's got to change... The past few months have seen us dealing with the high cost of gasoline, just like you are. So, why did we build "way out here?" Why not in town, or at least closer to town?
We spent a lot of time praying for and searching for our new house, or for a place to build it. We looked for a long time. This homestead we found was a real answer to our prayers. We drove up to this gorgeous lot that was even further out from our old house (we wanted to be closer to our church) and found a family having a picnic by the creek. Lo and behold, it was Colby Butler and his family. John took Colby on a camping trip or two 'way back when, when Colby was a teen. He remembered John as a good man and made us a good deal. We got the most beautiful lot for a song, compared to others nearby...and much cheaper than anything closer to our church. Colby was our contractor (he's dealing with the deck builders now since John's out of town--he's giving them "what for") and now we have the loveliest, most cheerful house I've ever lived in. Not fancy, but it's really us. And we love the Butlers.
And here we are, further out than ever. So we are consolidating every trip to town and re-evaluating the need for sports involvement. Karate stays...JT loves it, and he's pretty good at it. Soccer is over now, at least for a year. Field trips still happen, but they are completely planned out now, and must have something to do with what we are studying--no spur of the moment trips (fine with me, I don't do "spur of the moment" very well). Family takes priority. (So trips to see Heath, Audrey, Grandpa and Grand-Je and Nana and Papa are always on the list. Those won't stop.) Church activities are being weighed...not the mission trips, but some of the "just socializing" activities will be curtailed. We have a very active church, and could be busy several times a week. Just because it is good, doesn't mean it is good for us. Saying "no" is sometimes hard.
What else can we change to provide the outcome we want for godly children and time better spent at home? Well, we are changing how we "do school." This is the biggest change since we started homeschooling all those years ago with Bryan in Kindergarten. We are going to a unit study format, so all three kids will be studying the same subjects (but at different depths) at the same time. This means those science experiments will actually get done because I'll have three kids interested in the outcome, not just the one to whom I'm trying to teach the experiment. Trips to the different spots around our area will get done now, and more frequently because there is a reason to go--three reasons: Bryan, JT and Luci! A bonus: John retires soon, or will at least cut his days of work to 3 or so a week (that's by June of next year) so he can participate and go with us. He's a great adventurer, and makes a good compliment to my stick-in-the-mud-itis.
We've used AOP's LifePacs and Horizons, plus some other items along the way. Now we are moving on to Weaver Unit Studies. I am excited about it. It is a shake-up that I've needed, a totally different way of teaching my kids than I've ever done. Complacency is not good! We'll still use LifePacs for math, and Bryan's high school subjects will be supplemented with other items (for instance, he's learning Spanish with Power-Glide). It is more reminiscent of teaching in a classroom with several reading levels. You teach most things together but those specialized items like reading and math were divided up in my 3rd grade classroom in Duncanville.
I'm really looking forward to the next school year. Updates on our progress and change as it unfolds.

Okay, so she slept through ONE night. The last two nights have been horrible, and only about 2 hours of sleep each night. I should never mention her sleeping all the way through, it jinxes the days that follow!

Katie Bug's Mom tagged me. I don't know her yet, except through her blog, but we have a lot in common. We both homeschool and we both have 2 bio boys, and a precious girl from China. Even some of my answers could be copied from her list. I'll try to not do that! But I will keep the declaration at the beginning of Katie-bug's list:

Quirks about you? Love to plan. Any trip becomes the equivalent of a military campaign. Except for Disney World, I've become kind of relaxed about that place.

Any regrets in life? Yes. But not many.
Favorite charity or cause? Love Without Boundaries
Favorite blog recently? There are quite a few that I read every week, sometimes more often. They are all favorites for one reason or another. They make me think, make me laugh, make me even more thankful to belong to this really neat group of adoptive familes.

If you could be a fly on the wall, where? I would want to be in Luci's village, to see her birth family and to see how they live. I would want to be a talking fly, though, and tell them that she is safe and healthy and happy.
Favorite Bible verse right now? I Peter 2:9--a verse for Luci.
Guilty pleasure? Mystery novels, my favorite authors are Tamar Myers and MC Beaton.
If you had to spend $1000 on yourself, how would you spend it? A trip to Idaho! (see you guys SOON!)

What stresses you out? Household clutter. That pile of ironing that needs doing.
What can you not live without? Air conditioning. Serious answer: Christ.
Do you agree with the recent article that blogs are authored by narcissists? I haven't seen that article. But mine is sort-of narcissistic, to be honest. It's the only place I can talk. And I love telling about our kids. And I like to think that sometimes I am kind of funny. (I loved Erma Bombeck.)
Why do you blog? My family is scattered around the country. Nice way to keep them up-to-date without having to do a Christmas newsletter. And again, I like to talk, if only to myself.

Sure beats a basement full of septic tank waste, which was the last big terrible thing to happen when he was on an Army trip. This is a piece of cake, in comparison.

A Little Compassion....
BEIJING — Chinese officials said Monday that the country's one-child policy exempts families with a child killed, severely injured or disabled in the country's devastating earthquake.
Those families can obtain a certificate to have another child, the Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in the capital of hard-hit Sichuan province said.
The May 12 quake was particularly painful to many Chinese because it killed so many only children.
Chinese couples who have more than one child are commonly punished by fines.
The announcement says that if a child born illegally was killed in the quake, the parents will no longer have to pay fines for that child — but the previously paid fines won't be refunded.
If the couple's legally born child is killed and the couple is left with an illegally born child under the age of 18, that child can be registered as the legal child — an important move that gives the child previously denied rights, including free nine years of compulsory education.
In large parts of rural China, most families are allowed a second child, especially if the first was a girl.
Many Chinese have shown interest in adopting earthquake orphans, and Monday's announcement says there are no limits on the number of earthquake orphans a family can adopt.
The adoptions, or even a future birth to a family that adopts an orphan, will not face the limitations of the one-child policy.
Officials estimated last week that the quake left about 4,000 orphans, but they warned they would make every effort to connect children with other family members.

Saturday...John's Folks
We spent Saturday with John's folks. We went to Cullman to help them load some things from John's grandmother's house into a van. Jeannie showed Luci a jewelry box of costume jewelry and told her to pick something out. Luci was so enthralled by this box...you'd have thought it was a pirate's chest full of gold by her reaction. She picked out a string of pearls, and then found some old China pieces to bring home to play tea party. The boys worked hard for their grandparents and were cheerful about it. Afterwards, we traveled to their home about 40 miles south of Birmingham and the men unloaded the trailer. We had a great visit, and the kids heard some very interesting stories from Uncle David (John's brother) and Uncle Joe (John's uncle) and Grandpa. I just hope they don't try the same silly tricks their daddy did when he was their age!

What a Date! And Something Quite Rare...
What a Date!
.What were you doing the day your Chinese child was born? JT knows what he was doing! He was practicing his handwriting--and Luci's name was part of the lesson! Can you see the date at the top of the page? October 26, 2004...what a great record for JT to have! I found this when I was cleaning out our school cabinet. I put it back in there, at the bottom, so I can find it next year and have this great feeling again.

Something Quite Rare...

After supper tonight, I washed dishes while Luci curled up in John's lap. She fell asleep in his arms. Believe me, this is worthy of a photo. This is only the third or fourth time in our 3 years with her that she has fallen asleep with John. He is enjoying the moment!

Painless School Review, Part 3
John's birthday presents are perfect for extra learning opportunities. Do you think I told the boys that when they were choosing a present? No way! Password is great for learning synonyms and antonyms...I think the next time we play, I'll get out a thesaurus for the kids to use. That will increase their vocabulary even more without them knowing my ulterior motives. And Yahtzee (or, "Yut-zee" as Luci calls it) is great for math and probability.

Happy Birthday!
We celebrated John's birthday Tuesday, about 2 weeks early. He'll be on a trip on his birthday. Here's what happened.
Fancy wrapping paper!
Luci gave John a prized possession--one of her princess slippers. Unfortunately for John, she took it right back.
Everyone gets to pick out the kind of cake they want--John loves German chocolate cake. All Feingold approved, of course! It's short because the other layer has plain chocolate icing. We have some picky kids. Everyone was happy this way. What--you think there aren't enough candles?! John blew out the candles and then Luci was upset--she didn't get to help, so we lit them again. It's ages until her birthday and it is so hard to wait when you are only three.
The boys got John a Password game and "Yut-zee," as Luci calls it.
We all had fun playing the games.

A proud day, when the John Deere man delivers a new mower. It's the first new mower I've seen at this house since we got married...and that's a long time ago!

The John Deere guy is gone now, and here are my men trying to figure out how to start it.
Bryan finds some directions on the side and decides it might be a good idea to try reading those. But the machine would not start until MOM read the directions out of the manual and got John and Bryan to try those! (Sorry, there's no picture of Mom taking a victory lap!)

More Painless School Review
Mad-Libs are a great way to review parts of speech...noun, adjective, verbs and adverbs. There are blanks in the story and you ask someone for the noun (or whatever it says) to put in the blank. The sillier the word, the more fun it is. The kids do these in the van.
Today there was a blank that said "part of the body." I asked Luci to tell me a part of her body--so she responds in Mandarin! We've been watching some Mei Mei DVDs, and one taught body parts. Luci said, "Pee-gu," the word for bottom! She makes me laugh every day.
I'm sure I spelled the Mandarin pinyin for "bottom" wrong, please forgive me.

My Dream Came True
For years I've made costumes for the boys...Spiderman, Batman (4 different variations), Robin, Robin Hood, Blue Angel pilot, Army guy fighter pilot, tiger, Musketeer, what hasn't there been? There hasn't been a little girl anything! Three years ago I was busily sewing hats for the little girl we thought we'd get. We thought Luci would be a 3 year old. So I made hats and had the matching material ready to make jumpers to take to China with us. Then we got Luci's information. She was just 8 months old at referral! Thrilled to bits...but the hats went into a box.
The hats are out now, and I had fun cutting out six jumpers to match the six hats! Saturday morning I sewed while John took JT and Luci to JT's karate test (yea! He made red belt with white stripe yesterday!) and then met them at the soccer field for the last game of the year.
It was SO FUN sewing for my baby girl. It just made my heart feel so good. And then Luci's reaction was incredibly wonderful! She gathered up all six jumpers, hugged them, and said, "I love my new dresses!" Made my entire week. Made me not mind losing so much sleep with her last week.
Here are some pics of Luci this morning. I couldn't decide which one to show, so here they all are.
Mom, do you remember giving us this play iron last year? Luci is busy "making my dress warm!" all by herself. It's a flashy purple sequined dress, very appropriate for a three year old, don't you think? (Ha! NO!)
The hats are out now, and I had fun cutting out six jumpers to match the six hats! Saturday morning I sewed while John took JT and Luci to JT's karate test (yea! He made red belt with white stripe yesterday!) and then met them at the soccer field for the last game of the year.

Well, the title tells what this is...the last game of the season. There are rumors that 7th graders might get to play next year. JT is hoping they can because he loves this so much.

When we signed up for the season, I wrote on JT's application to please be put on the same team as Tyler, since Tyler didn't know anyone else and that they were homeschool buddies. The "powers that be" must have thought that to be a good idea, because all but one of the kids on the team is homeschooled. This was such a nice group of boys.
At every game, their is a devotional, Bible reading and at the end the kids get a colored star representing the Christ-like trait they had shown while playing the game. There are 5 or 6 different traits the coaches look for. The kids love collecting the star stickers.

Wrap-Ups!
Have you ever used Wrap-Ups? They are a painless (almost) way of getting the kids to practice math facts. I have three sets--fractions, multiplication and addition. I thought I had a set of subtraction wrap-ups, but I guess not--or maybe my leprechauns hid that set.
Here's what you do: wrap the string around the little board from the notch on the left to the correct notch on the right. For instance, if you are doing the x5 board above, you start on 5, then wrap the string to 15 on the right. Then go to the second notch on the left, and continue. When you are done, pull the string up through the notch on the bottom and turn it over--it will look like this:
If you got the answers correct, the string matches up exactly to the lines on the back. You can see the lines on this pink board.
Here's JT working on his multiplication tables. I have a little chart to keep track of how fast each boy does each wrap-up. They are in competition with themselves (not each other) to see if they can beat their old times.
Yes, we are officially done with school but the kids need lots of extra practice on their multiplication tables. I got a book with lots of practice in it from the convention last week, so the guys have some learnin' to do before we hang it up for a month or two.

Just had to show this. Last night while John was watching a DVD with Luci, and as the boys were working on their multiplication tables, I was working on the puzzle page in the paper. I did the 5-star Sudoku! So I carried on and did all the other puzzles without even a mark-out. Hooray!
